In 2008 Dr. Carey served in Iraq. He was part of a team of military doctors to train Iraqi surgeons in facial trauma surgery. Dr. Carey was invited to participate as part of the US State Department. Dr. Carey appreciates and admires the risk and sacrifice that our troops and State Department officials endure and was honored to be a small part of it.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Dr. Carey’s experience with traumatic brain injuries including concussion is extensive. With over half the brain’s nerve fibers involved with vision or eye movement, Dr. Carey has been involved with the evaluation and treatment of thousands of brain injuries. At the University of Washington, Dr. Carey studied traumatic brain injuries at Ellsworth Alvord’s Neuropathology Laboratory for four years. He did a fellowship in Eye and Brain Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital studying under W. Richard Green. His work in Baltimore led to stints at the Bethesda Naval Hospital and Walter Reed Army Hospital. Dr. Carey spent time in Iraq as a trauma surgeon in 2008 and has been a consultant for the military for over 20 years.

Dr. Carey has worked as a team physician for the Seattle Seahawks and the University of Washington Department of Athletics for over 30 years evaluating and treating thousands of athletes. He has witnessed and participated in the evolution of concussion understanding and training throughout this time. He has written the concussion protocol for the 4 Snoqualmie Pass Ski Areas. At the Pass, he serves as an Alpine Patroller and Patrol doctor certified by the National Ski Patrol. He is an author and invited editor for the textbook “Outdoor Emergency Care “, 6th edition, which serves as the main textbook for all the Ski Patrols of USA, Canada, and Europe. His work with the Ski Patrol encompasses hundreds of hours a year and is on a volunteer basis. Dr. Carey is also a Search, Rescue and Recovery Diver certified at the Master level by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors).

Through all these unique experiences, Dr. Carey has seen and treated thousands of eye injuries and traumatic brain injuries and their overall effect on the visual system. Dr. Carey has also observed through dozens of years of experience their expected rate of improvement and recovery.

Due to the extensive workup involved in the evaluation of TBI (traumatic brain injuries), Dr. Carey requires all TBI patients he sees as a treating doctor be referred through the University of Washington Sports Medicine Department.
